"We are not born to just pay bills and die." - unknown
Sometimes in the midst of life's ebb and flow, there are periods of stagnancy. We've all experienced it, whether it be in our relationships, our careers, our creativity or our convictions about life.
You have goals or dreams or had goals and dreams.
But then, something happens. Life happens.
And you began to slip into a gray area of self doubt, anxiety and creative negligence.
You begin to go through the motions of life without being conscious of them, making promises to yourself that even you are not fool enough to believe and letting your true dreams, aspirations and ambitions fall by the wayside.
But when all hope seems lost, trust me when I say that things will get better!
You will fall in love again, you will get another (better) job, you will write again, create again and feel like yourself again. Magic, passion, love and laughter exist and they are yours for the taking!
So, if you're feeling especially uninspired today or any day, here are a few steps to help you get back on track:
1.) Make peace with your life - Truly. Accept where you are and why you are there. There are so many lessons to be learned and many times they are taught in moments of total bewilderment or hopelessness. This doesn't mean that you should settle for anything less than you deserve, but more that if you take steps in the right direction it is bound to pay off! So be patient.
2.) Do something you love for you - Choose an activity that you love and vow to do it as often as you can. If you love to write then set aside time every day to write or maybe start your own blog! (Squarespace, Weebly, Wix or Wordpress are good places to start). If you love exercise, go out there and get some in before or after the end of the work day. (Start following a few blogs that inspire you to stick with it!) If you love spending time with friends, designate one night a week to catching up over coffee or dinner or drinks. (Hersh's, The Metropolitan, Birroteca, Riptide by the Bay, Mi & Yu Noodle Bar are just a few of my Baltimore favorites).
4.) Take it one step at a time and focus on development - Every win ( BIG OR SMALL) is a WIN. If you want to open your own shop just start the research, if you want to get a new job just start looking, if you want to move somewhere start searching for places! Set little goals for yourself that are absolutely achievable and focus on your progress.
5.) Don't expect perfection - No. One. Is. Perfect. No, not even you. We make mistakes, we learn and we grow. There will be roadblocks and minor set backs but don't let them overwhelm you. keep your eye on the prize and you'll get there!
6.) Count your blessings - When you find yourself getting frustrated or anxious, take a deep breath and count your blessings. Literally, count them or write them down. Think of all the terrible situations in the world and how yours ranks on that scale. Laugh and remember that everything you have is a miracle, a blessing. From family and friends that love and support you, to the paycheck that allows you to pay bills and do the things you want to do, to the car that gets you from point A to B, etc, etc. Not everyone is so lucky as you!
7.) Cherish every moment - Look around you and where you are at this very moment. Cherish the fact that you are able to be there. Appreciate everything from the half empty coffee cup on your desk, to the snow on the ground outside, to the clothes on your back. Everything is beautiful.
