Just when we thought summer would never come, here we are in its midst. Oh how we missed you, the season of:
warm weather and lots of sunshine
concerts on the lawn
long car rides with the windows rolled down
ice cold beer
bikinis and summer dresses
friends and lovers,
I could go on and on.
As kids we longed for summer break when we could finally sleep in, lay by the pool and waste entire days vegging out on the couch, no where to be, nothing to do, the pure bliss of relaxation. We heard the age old adage spoken by every adult to every school age child, "Enjoy it while it lasts, because in the real world there is no such thing as summer break" or "What I wouldn't do for a summer break again." With all its perks, adulting also comes with its own unique set of cons, no summers off being one among many. If only we'd known then, how relevant that adage would be years later, maybe we would have savored the hours just a little more.
As a recent college grad, its around this time of year that I find myself laid up with a bad case of the summer blues. Like a summer long hangover, the longing to be somewhere on a beach at 5 pm with a cold drink in hand follows me around and often interrupts productivity and motivation to get through the day. There is no easy transition from the years of two month long summer vacations to those of naught.
But a few prized material possessions (as shallow as that sounds) have helped to brighten up my days and get me through yet another work week.
I thought I'd share them with you!
(As featured above)
1.) Brass geo terrarium (World Market - $19.99) - Geometric home decor has become all the rage and I totally dig it. Without a house of my own to decorate, I find myself picking up odds and ends here or there that might add a nice accent when I finally decide to venture into a space all my own. This brass terrarium is the perfect addition (with or without foliage) to any empty space. Mine sits atop a stack of my favorite books on my dresser and gives just a touch more character to an otherwise haphazard literary assortment.
2.) Sonix phone case for iphone 6/6s in pineapple (Amazon - $35.00) - I've always thought pineapples were a perfect summer snack, but the fact that they are now appearing on everything from fashion accessories, to home decor, to clothing and more, makes me extremely happy. As fabulous as this phone case is, don't let that fool you, it's also extremely functional. I've had nothing but Sonix cases for the past 4 years and I have to say, as someone who drops their phone often, these cases have withstood the test of time. I also like them because they are lightweight and don't add the unnecessary bulkiness of many Otterbox and similar cases. This pineapple phone case is trendy, cute and perfect for summer.
3.) Beaded Tassel Necklace (Target - $16.99) - I admit it, I'm a Target addict. I, like many, find myself wandering its aisles with no true goal in mind, which puts me at my most vulnerable when it comes to finding things I love, but really don't need. During one of my most recent target rendezvous' I went with every intention of finding stylish, but practical storage containers yet found myself in the fashion accessories section totally by accident and oops, wouldn't ya know it, I walked away with this little gem. I've been pairing her with white tops and ripped jeans or flowy sun/maxi dresses.
4.) Ray Ban Aviators (Ray Ban - $150.00 - $175.00) - Oldies, but goodies. You can never go wrong with a classic. And I love that mine have white rubber around the ear piece.
5.) Pineapple Trinket Dish (Anthropologie - $18.00) - Couldn't resist. I mean it's totally functional, right?
6.) Formula X Nail Varnish (Sephora - $10.00) - Who doesn't love a good nail polish in the summer? Go a little crazy with color. The ones featured above are: Oceanic (blue), Lively (yellow) and Intrepid (green) but there are so many others. Check out your local Sephora or click the title link to find out more.
7.) Elevenses Costa Maya Shorts in White (Athropologie - $39.95) - Dress 'em up or dress 'em down, these shorts are the perfect summer staple. During the day pair them with the lace up espadrilles featured above or with a cute brown wedge for a night on the town. For a blouse, try something plain and off the shoulder in light blue, black or salmon.
8.) Lace up Espadrilles in Oak (Gap - $44.95) - Warning, no half sizes available so I suggest going up a size rather than down. These leather sandals are the equivalent of a soft suede slipper, but work appropriate. What could be better? I wear mine to the pool, to work, to summer block parties and more. I would even recommend them for periods of extended walking or exploration. Something easy to slip into a suitcase on vacation. And they go with everything. They come in admiral blue, happy pink, true black and oak (above).
So now that you know a few of my summer favorites! I'd love to know what some of yours are OR if you try these out, what you think!
