Some things never change.
Like the magic of a good old-fashioned love story gift-wrapped tenderly in the glow of the holiday season. Or as it turns out, the time-honored tradition of the wedding registry (although the internet has lent it's helpful hand along the way).
But what has changed? Well, historically, a lot.
For one, the number of couples who are living together before marriage is about 29 percent higher at 18 million versus the 14 million who were cohabitating in 2007. And you may not be surprised to learn that millennials, those younger than 35, make up about half of cohabiters.
Resident Newlywed-at-Large, Jennifer Spector, moonlights by day as Zola's director of brand marketing and says that while this trend may lead many couples to pursue alternate avenues when building their registry, in many ways the same appliances that have graced registries since their conception will continue to do so throughout future generations as well.
"Now that so many couples are living together before they get married, they're often looking to receive experiences they can share together. The gift of travel, for example, an Airbnb gift card, is something that newlyweds can treasure long after their wedding date." Jennifer Spector, Zola's resident Newlywed-at-Large moonlights by day as spokesperson and director of brand marketing.
BUT she'll also be the first to tell you "Physical gifts aren't going anywhere—the KitchenAid Stand Mixer will be the most wanted gift by engaged couples until death do us part! Couples still want traditional upgrades as much as they want more modern gifts, like experiences or contributions to a honeymoon fund."
We caught up with Zola, a wedding company that claims to be reinventing the wedding planning and registry experience for modern couples, on a brisk fall day at Union Market in D.C. It was their last stop on "The Love Stories Tour" a collaboration with the hit podcast Modern Love where anyone from lofty lovebirds to friends, family and neighbors could record their modern day love story, friendship saga or chance encounter whilst inside a 1970's camper reinvented to accommodate a "registry on wheels".
And registry it was. Complete with mock table settings in some of this season's most popular colors, gold, marble and crystal, a gorgeous gold bar cart complete with background accent wall in black and succulents galore. Even the boho chic furniture placed outside was a newly weds dream with macrame chairs, bold foliage and leather Moroccan poufs.
So if you happen to find yourself newly engaged, a lucky wedding invitee or an honorary member of the wedding party these top 15 registry gifts will give you the perfect head start.
