If you were judging by Instagram, it might be hard to believe that it was less than a year ago (and 4,000 followers give or take) that Sam Waid of Rise and Rejoice found her passion for embroidery and totally, absolutely, 100 percent, embraced it.
But that is exactly what happened in October of 2017 when she began teaching herself to sew and design one-of-a-kind, original works as a hobby while attending school at Towson University.
Over the past year, while Sam's business continued to grow, so did her passion for travel, learning and the beauty of nature which continue to shine through in her work. We happened upon her pieces (and were obsessed immediately) at a small, local arts market inside Athropologie on a particularly hot and humid summer day in early May. Thank goodness she agreed to be featured in the By Elly Jane Shop, because now we get to obsess all the time!
We also shot Sam a quick Q&A to get to know her better and we hope you enjoy her answers below!
1.) Tell me about Rise and Rejoice, when/where/how you got started and how you got to this point? What is your favorite thing about creating your art? I’ve always been an artist and people have been telling me to sell my work for a while but I never found the right medium. One day I started to teach myself embroidery and fell in love. It’s very meditative for me and I love how I can do it anywhere! I began by stitching a few patterns but quickly realized I wanted to sell these and design my own work. I officially started Rise + Rejoice back in October of 2017 and it has been such a wild ride! I never thought that I would have sold over 150 original works of art in the first year, let alone the first 8 months. My favorite thing about embroidery is that I can do it anywhere I go, hanging with friends, on a plane, really wherever!
2.) What inspires/excites you? I’m so inspired by the world around us! I love gathering inspiration from botanicals or natural things around me. I’m always excited about upcoming travels. I love exploring around the country and finding unique shops, restaurants and beautiful places.
3.) What's your favorite ice cream flavor? I love anything with chocolate & peanut butter!!
4.) When you were little what did you dream about? I always wanted to be a fashion designer up until my senior year of high school. I would dream about that all the time but eventually decided to go down a different path - but I’m still a fiber artist so I do still deal with fabrics & textiles!
5.) What makes Rise and Rejoice so special? While there are a few businesses that do what I do, I think I have created a unique style and voice. I love line work and black and White and that’s a theme that runs through my work.
6.) Who's your favorite celebrity and why? I don’t think I have a favorite celebrity actually.
7.) What are three words you would use to describe yourself? Adventurous, Creative, Hardworking
8.) What is your biggest fear? My biggest fear is probably being totally alone. Like in a bigger sense of not having anyone there for you or anyone to turn to when life gets hard. I love my family and friends so much & couldn’t imagine not having that support system!
9.) What would be your absolute favorite way to spend a day? I would wake up, go to one of my favorite local coffee shops with some friends. And then spend the day hiking or kayaking! All wrapped up with some delicious outdoor meal with my loved ones.
10.) What is your most valuable memory? Last summer I was able to travel to Seattle for a bit. I went by myself for a day or two and then met up with my brother. Being able to travel alone is something I’m really proud of and I also loved exploring a new place with my brother! We went hiking and just enjoyed nature and it was a great day to just spend time with him & enjoy creation!
